MAIN STREETS OF CHERAW-- The main streets of Cheraw were laid out by Joseph and Eli Kershaw. This plan, dated 1823, was probably done at the instance of the Chatham Town Company that appears to have bought the town from the Kershaw heirs. In April of 1823 the Chatham Town Company sold about 500 lots at public auction. Front Street and the eastern end of Church Street were the main commercial area. Notice the smaller lots. Though the streets closer to the river were marked off, all of these were probably not in existence then, since the river was subject to flooding. The second public square does not appear on later maps. |
