The information below (as well as the picture) was forwarded to me by John Bigham through Dianne Gillam, a fellow Gillam family researcher. Mr. Bigham is the Curator of Special Collections at the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum. A trip to the museum would be well-worth your time if you get into the flags, uniforms, etc. of South Carolina (especially the Confederate era). Below is a scanned copy of the Museum brochure--it is located adjacent to the State Museum on Gervais Street in Columbia. The link to the museum is at the bottom of the page.
Mr. Bigham also forwarded the photo of the Hart's Battery Guidon, the flag shown in the photo. The flag can be viewed in the Confederate Relic Room.
From Mr. Bigham's e-mail:
Harts Battery group at Richmond for the United Confederate Veterans Reunion, July 1896.
Front Row, left to right: William J. Murdock, Porter R. Pearson, J. S. Livingston, Dempsey S. Salley, Col. Louis Sherfesee, William Selving, H. J. Carney, F. M. Bamburg.
Back row on porch: D. Paul Sojourner, gunner at Trevillian Station, William T. J. Phillips [1846-1913], Major James F. Hart [promoted captain November 1861, to major of artillery December 1864, wounded at Burgess Mills October 28, 1864 losing right leg.], Johnson A. Walker, orderly sergeant, Henry Kennedy, teamster, Elijah Guess, J. B. Gilliam, Madison W. Felder, Moss Easterling, and Dr. S. Tindal.
In the Hart's group, J. B. Gilliam is 7th to the right standing slightly behind Elijah Guess who has a nice brush and is slightly bald.
This photograph was given to us by granddaughters of William T. J. Phillips and was identified, I suppose, by their ancestor. I hope that you were able to find the flag in the picture which is on exhibit in the museum.
